John Fuhrman is the Chief Rub Master of Bub n’ Mutha’s, a veteran-owned gourmet dry rub company with a Maine attitude. Their flavors can be used on just about anything from pork to beef, avocado toast, fried zucchini and more. Proudly made in Winter Harbor, Maine, the company ships across the United States.
In this episode of the Go For Launch podcast, he tells the origin story of starting the company, along with the ups-and-downs of launching a consumer product, dealing with retailers and more.
A native of Maine, Fuhrman also discusses how he convinced “Mainers” (whose No. 1 choice of meat is of course lobsters!) to pick his product over larger competitors—and learn to prepare and cook other meats in the oven during the harsh Maine winters. As he said, “It had to be more than just a dry rub. Mainers like to have things with multiple uses. That’s the tradition and the common sense that makes everyone so resilient.”
Fuhrman served in the U.S. Navy and takes pride in hiring veterans. For every 10,000 units sold, Bub ‘n Mutha’s hires an area veteran full-time for a year.
